A Symphonic Serenade

The Ridgewood Symphony Quartet

Recently we were honored to be the setting of a symphonic presentation rehearsal by members of the Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra Quartet. A serenade can be considered somewhere in between a suite and a symphony, but is usually of a light and romantic nature — casual and without too many overly dramatic moments. In essence it is a short suite of instrumental pieces, similar to the divertimento, cassation, and notturno. Mozart wrote several serenades for a variety of ensembles, as did subsequently Franz Schubert, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and Max Reger.
